Sun, 7 February 2010
A few years ago the Disney Company came out with an interactive plush Mickey Mouse called "Pal Mickey", Pal Mickey was deigned to actually interact, or react to electronic signals in the Disney parks, so if you were in Epcot he would tell you about things in Epcot, if you were at the Magic Kingdom he would share facts about that park and so on. While this pull string toy from 1976 is no where NEAR being up to THAT level of technology, it is an interesting parallel to think of this as a sort of precursor to that is some (tiny) way, and thought provoking as to how far the technology we would devote to something that is "just a toy" has advanced. |

This Episode was recorded late in my December 2008 trip to Walt Disney World, this was after Mousefest, and it was also the one day that my wife, Carlene, chose to join me in the parks. Since she had been in a lot of pain when walking for a while leading up to the trip she used an ECV this day, which worked out well as otherwise I would have not been able to cover so much ground going back and forth around World Showcase. I had a schedule for the World Showcase Players and knew coming into the park when they were performing, butwhat I did not know was which times were for thier "regular material" and which sets they would be doing thier special Holiday skit A Christmas Carol. So when they did their first set of the day I was there but they were performing King Arthur and the Holy Grail so we got the set times for A Christmas Carol and continued on our way. Working our way all the way around to Mexico before putting it into reverse and working our way back to the United Kingdom for this afternoon set.

This Episode was recorded on the last day of my December 2008 trip to Walt Disney World, Mousefest was over, and I decided to end this trip in the same park in which I started the trip, enjoying some of the great live entertainment found in the Magic Kingdom. In particular I wanted to catch a special set by the Main Street Philharmonic, comprised completely of songs from Disney movies, I had recorded the same set a few days previous with mixed results, and with the experience I gained with my new recording device this set came out much better. links

In July of 2007 I put out an Independence Day show using the patriotic songs the Voices of Liberty did during my trip in June of that year, I knew at the time that I wanted to put the other songs from those sets into some kind of a show, and here it FINALLY is!
links
songsThe Voices of LibertyThese songs were all recorded on June 16 and 17 of 2007, if you would like to see the original line up of the sets you can check the lists of the sets in the trip report, http://www.bigbrian-nc.com/trindex.htm#06.07 as the list here will be of the ones in the episode. The photos and song lists for the sets are on pages 18,19,and 20 for the date of the 16th, and the those related to the sets I heard on the 17th are on pages 32, 33, and 35...man I took a lot of pictures that trip!
SELECTED PHOTOSBelow: I don't have a perfect photo that caught the whole group on the 16th but this one comes close, Krista was conducting this day.
Below: While on the 17th Dirk was conducting (one gentleman is not visable in this veiw, but it was the closest I had to the whole group in one shot that day.
Ray had the the solo on Rockytop, Tennessee (also on Black Is The Color Of My True Loves Hair)
Dirk, the conductor on sunday the 17th, ( pictured above )did the solo on the version of Oh Susanah that played in this episode, yet that was the only one of the three soloists who did this song where I did not get a "Susanah picture" where the soloist picks a lady out of the audience to be his Susanah, so here are the other two. First heres JC
actually I got TWO photos when Ray did his...

I listen to A LOT of Disney podcasts, and usually a podcast that "occasioanlly" talks about Disney just won't stay on my plylist for very long, there is ONE notable exception to that though, I've been listening to Comedy4Cast for a long time now, since back in the low double digits, (he recently published episode 151 ) and recently I had the opportunity to finish something his show inspired me to start a while back. It all goes back to a running gag about milestones in podasting and how a lot of folks make a big deal about episode 50 or episode 100 well Clinton didn't make a milestone out of episode 100, he celebrated a TRUE milestone instead...episode 103, well my mind tends to think in musical terms and the mention of episode 103 triggered an idea for me and in fairly short order I had some lyrics written down, and even took a couple of stabs at recording, BUT I kept flubbing the lyrics AND it occurred to me as I was recording that Clinton only uses POD SAFE MUSIC, royalty free stuff, so as I ran out of time to record that day that project went to the back burner, and it stayed there a LOOOOONG time, several episodes back Clinton introduced a new concept the virtual table of random things, which has been a GREAT way of getting fun, interesting, humorous feedback from his audience BOTH via email AND by the Super Secret Phone Line (360) 515-0004 (But DON'T tell anyone shhh! it's a secret), well it finally dawned on me that I could leave a virtual CD of this tribute to Clinton show on the Virtual table and host the audio in my libsyn account (but without publishing it to my podcast feed, since it's not an episode of my podcast) so without further adieu...

If you want to download the show manually (instead of using a podcast aggregater such as Itunes) then right-click on this link: http://media.libsyn.com/media/bbdp/bbdp42.mp3 and choose SAVE TARGET AS to save the file to your hard drive. ![]() In this time of economic downturn with Walt Disney World seemingly, battening down the hatches for a slow down in business by cutting back on some of its live entertainment groups, it is nice to hear that some folks from the Adventurers Club and Comedy Warehouse may have other jobs on property, I recently leaned that Carol, a talented keyboardist who worked at the Comedy Warehouse, got a job at Rose & Crown Pub, while I was quite pleased to hear this my next thought was, "Does that mean that Pam Brodie has went into full retirement? (she works two days a week in a sort of semi-retirement position), or are they getting rid of Leon Gregory?", it then occurred to me that perhaps there was another option too perhaps they would add some earlier sets, I then realized in the current economic climate that was quite unlikely, and when I got the opportunity to chat with some other fans asked if any of them had heard what the story was, unfortunately it turns out they are getting rid of Leon, in fact his last day has come and gone. Unfortunately times of unemployment seem to be an unavoidable fact of life for most musicians. You know, when you think about it Walt Disney World allows an almost unheard of opportunity for musicians to have regular work without having to travel. I'll miss Leon and hope he lands on his feet, and with his talent and experience, think that he may have a better chace at that than most folks would in his situation, with some luck I may get to hear him play again someday. As for Carol I only caught her once, as for me I only made my first trip to the Comedy Warehouse for the first time last December (and decided I needed to visit it more on future trips, oh well, so much for that!) even from that brief exposure it was clear she is one talented individual. So the next time I'm at the pub in the Great Brittan Pavilion I'll enjoy Carol (or Pam Brodie if it is one of her days) but I'll pause and think of Leon Gregory in a silent toast to him. As I recounted on this episode I first saw Leon perform on the "Trip without a camera" (Celebration 25), but the set in this episode was recorded a few weeks later when I was on a trip where I was able to stop and listen for a full set (RADP 12). links The Let's Talk About Disney Forums: http://www.letstalkaboutdisney.com/LTADForum/index.php The Mousin it up! subsection of LTAD http://www.letstalkaboutdisney.com/LTADForum/forumdisplay.php?f=64 The Yahoo group for the bigbrian-nc.com site and NC Disney news is at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/disneypodcast/ Steve Soares fine site of WDW entertainment schedules: http://pages.prodigy.net/stevesoares/ songs The Extraordinary Leon Gregory

Sometimes music sets a nice mood, of course if you are listening to my podcast you then have a voice coming in possibly breaking that mood, I'm aware of this, and as such, I offered at the end of episode 29, which featured the musicians of the Grand Floridian, to provide the episode WITHOUT my naration for anyone who wanted it. I recently had such a request but when I tried to send the files to the guy first they were too big for my email, then when i broke them down for that his email bounced them as they were to large for his to accept, so from this seeming setback I found an opportunity to share it as a download here:

In this episode we visit Epcot's Norway and celbrate Norwegian Constitution Day by taking in the sounds of Spelmann's Gledge. This audio was recorded on September 30th and Oct 1 2007 when I visited Epcot on the occasion of its 25thh anniversary.
Since this was "the trip without a camera" finding an appropriate photo was a bit tougher than usual but thanks to the gereosity of a flickr user by the name of Gator-Chris http://www.flickr.com/photos/gator-chris/ I have this photo taken BY HIM on Sept. 30, just a few sets before the set I recorded. In honor of Mexicos Independence Day, September 16, this Episode features TWO sets by the Mariachi Cobre from Epcots Mexico pavilion, this group is one of the largest groups of musicians left at WDW with nearly a dozen perfomers on stage at any given performance. This group was formed in Tuscon Arizona in 1971 so as a group they are older than Epcot center. The sets found in this episode were the last two sets of the day on Saturday June 16, 2007 and the first set was so long there were barely fifteen minutes from the end of that set until the beggining of the next set.

This Episode features TWO sets by Mo'rockin, the fantastic band from the Morocco pavilion at Epcot that combines new musical styles with more traditional Moroccan musical sounds to make thier music. Also in this episode, a story about a background music loop song (BGM) that I learned a bit about, a couple of plugs for a few Disney related sites you may enjoy, and an announcement about a new way to send feedback to the show. The sets by Mo-Rockin and the BGM music I mentioned were all recorded Saturday June 16, 2007.

This Episode is a bit of a sneak preview of some of the sounds to be found over the next few months on this podcast having at least one song each from most of the groups I recorded with the exception of two one I noted in the show, The Spirit of America Fife and Drum Corp, the other omission I realized after closing production of the episode the Main Street Philharmonic. Theres is also a full set by one of the groups as I only had one set by Spelmans Glidje and since it has some sound quality issues I thought it would be better to include it here than to try to make it the centerpiece of a later episode.

In this Episode one piece of audio runs for the whole episode (though I talk over it through the quiet parts) this recording of the Disneyland Bands Concert aboard the Mark Twain riverboat was taken on July 15, 2005. This is the last of the three sessions of the Disneyland band that I recorded that trip and also the closest to complete, though even here I didn't get audio of the band coming on stage, so I guess none of the DL Band Concerts I recorded is 100 percent complete, still, this would be the closest, as I'm sure the other sets are missing full songs that were played before I arrived on those occasions. Also the return of the postcard segment, and some meet reports from some of the Disney events I've atended the past few months. |

In this Episode we have Space Mountain recorded in WDW's Magic Kingdom, on December 7, 2006, also, audio of the Tomorrowland Speedway bit I've got on my youtube account ( http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=bigbrianDASHncDOTcom), and another ragtime piano set this one was recorded July 17th 2005 (Disneylands 50th Anniversary!), there's also a tiny portion of the audio which I used in the Special Edition I released last week in honor of the 4th anniversary of Tagrel.com (Happy Birthday Tagrel!) http://www.tagrel.com. All the information in the postcard segment was provided by Kevin Hughes whose Postcardguy Antiques Store (featuring many WDW and Disneyland cards) can be found at www.postcardguy.com .

In this Special Editon (not released to the Itunes feed due to it's limited intest to non-taginators) of the Mousin' it Up podcast there is audio from the Dec. 10, 2006 Karaoke meet at Kimonos in the Dolphin hotel at Walt Disney World. Only a small portion of the songs sang made it into this episode for a couple of reasons, first off my wife and I didn't stay particularly late, but also, sadly, I had technical problems (my mini disc player having a dead battery seems to be the most likely cause of the problem in this case). As is normal for my show a full version of the show notes is on my web site:

Much like episode 10 this episode has audio in it taken during our Honeymoon in 2002, we have sound recorded on the morning of October 31, 2002 on the "Magic Behind Our Steam Trains" tour at the Magic Kingdom, Also a "flood" of 2006 postcards (and a few 2007 related ones), that's actually a bit of a pun, although there are quite a few postcard images on the two pages, the pun comes from the fact that the intro music to the show is performed by a group called the 1937 Flood, not a Disney group, but they do a song about a train that was made a nice intro (anyhow I like it). http://www.bigbrian-nc.com/trindex.htm#moon

This Episode features Christmas music audio from both the Magic Kingdom, and Epcot theme parks of Walt Disney World, all taken from performances by the many live musicians who perform in these parks, while I'd love to g go a round and get music from all the live performers in the park, at least the little bit I have here can give you some idea of some of the places to start listening for live holiday audio if you find yourself in the parks in the Holiday Season. There's audio of the Voices of Liberty, and the Spirit of America Fife and Drum Corp taken during Mousefest 2005. There's also a lot of audio from during the Mousefest Celebration this year (2006). There's music from both of the Main Street pianists, Mark and Jim, also from the Magic Kingdom we have audio from the Frontierland trio known as the Notorious Banjo Brothers and Bob (last heard on this pod cast as the Lone Strangers in the Halloween episode), additionally the group occasionally known as the Fantasyland Woodwind Society plays a few "Holiday" tune (two of which have the word "Holiday"in the title), though in this appearance here they are in their Fantasyland garb and appear as Cinderella's Royal Saxaphonists. We then head over to Epcot for a Holiday tune by a group you might not think of when it comes to Holiday music, the Cyber Groove, then we take a trip back in time to 1998 (Or perhaps 99?) when the American Adventure pavilion had just had a new addition to their line up, yep we have a few holiday songs by an early line -up of the group known as American Vybe, we then bookend the show with another set by the Voices of Liberty from 05, before deciding that arrangement of Holiday music on the shelf can use one more holiday/Mousefest tune tacked on at the end, I hope you enjoy it. all these images were from our Honeymoon trip to WDW in 2002. There are several pieces of audio from that trip that will appear in future episodes of Big Brians Disney Podcast, including two of the absolute best pieces, that are in this episode, which were recorded AT the Halloween Party. Those pieces are; the Halloween Riverboat Cruise featuring a ghost story delivered by Auntie Bellum and music by the Lone Strangers (The Notorious Banjo and Brothers and Bobs Halloween costumes), and A Diamond Horseshoe Halloween performance with much of the old cast of the Horseshoe, Jingles, Dr. Bill, Professor Terrace, and special guests the Cadaver Dans (an undead barbershop quartet). I'm going to......Allentown??? Oh Yeah it's time for Dismeets annual gathering in Allentown PA, a good time for fun and friends. The audio in this episode is from one of the "seminars" in one of the break out room sessions Deb Wills speaks on Epcot's International Food and Wine Festivial, if you (like I) only had a passing knowledge of this event, then here's a great place to learn a lot of the details of just what types of events are available at the festival. In the postcard segment I talk a little about storage, and if you only listen to Disney podcasts for the music, well at least theres a song at each end of the podcast for you, and as always, there are images of the things you are heaaring about in this podcast on my web site http://www.bigbrian-nc.com (then follow the links to the episode 03 show notes)....Enjoy! Here are a few sounds from the first few days of our trip to Disneyland last July, this episode features; the river Rascals, Ragtime pianist "Johnny", the Disneyland Band, and in a special Tomorrowland appearance tied to the re-dedication of Space Mountain, Dwight Kennedy's New Orleans Dixie Kings. Also in this episode in the postcard corner we talk about the nice set of cards available from the Behind the Magic 50 years of Disneyland exhibit, and how to get them for far less than Ebay prices, also I go over the latest issue of the International Disney Postcard Collectors Club newsletter and add my 2¢ worth of information to Jays Patels fine work.
